After all, a girl is not an object that one can treat and manipulate like a puppet, a girl is someone who needs love, kindness, and someone who understands them.
GIRLS VOICE THEIR RIGHTS AT GIRLS INCORPORATED SITES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, MAY 14 – 21, 2000
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 2000
Girls nationwide will participate in a range of activities, May 14–21, 2000, designed to help girls understand and assert their rights. These activities are part of Girls Inc. Week, an annual, week-long event held at Girls Inc. affiliates and program partners across the country.
Among the activities for this year's theme, Girls Voice Their Rights, Girls Inc. girls will conduct online focus groups, talking with peers about their rights and how adults can help girls assert them. The focus groups, being organized through Harris Interactive technology, will teach girls about online research. Girls Inc. will use the findings of these focus groups to further develop its messages to adults and girls for the Girls' Rights Campaign.
This online activity grows out of Harris Interactive research commissioned by Girls Inc., which surveyed more than 1,000 girls about their rights. The survey found that a majority of girls experience barriers to most of their rights, but girls also feel confident about their abilities and futures. The goal of the online focus groups is to get girls' feedback about where they are experiencing barriers and how adults can help them overcome these barriers.
Other activities Girls Inc. affiliates and program partners will hold for girls will focus on the individual rights outlined in the Girls' Bill of Rights . Through hands-on activities and discussions, girls will explore the damaging effects of gender stereotypes. For example, girls will highlight their strengths and abilities through art and poetry, and voice their concerns to community leaders around a number of issues.
