It's good to be a girl in this world today. I like being a girl because I can speak for myself. I can stand up for myself. Being a girl makes me strong.
New York Life Foundation is funding the
development of In Our Own Hands, a leadership and community action program for 12-
to 14-year-olds in seven cities. In Our Own Hands is an extension of our highly
successful Discovery: A Leadership Program, for girls aged 9-11, and recognizes the
growing maturity of the girls and their ability to decide on their own what is important to
them and how to make something positive happen in their community. In the program, girls
study the history of strong women leaders and learn about topics such as community, power,
culture and heritage, rights and responsibilities, and social change. Ultimately, the girls
build on their new skills and knowledge by choosing and implementing a community service
project, and they identify and recruit adult women who can support and mentor them in their
project.
Established in 1979 by New York Life Insurance Company, the New York Life Foundation currently dedicates the majority of its resources to helping young people as part of a Company-wide initiative called Nurturing the Children. The Nurturing the Children initiative specifically focuses on providing safe places to learn and grow; educational enhancement; and mentoring.
